A Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer is an advanced air pollution control system designed to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) through high-temperature combustion. The structure typically consists of several key functional areas:
Exhaust Area: This is the inlet section where contaminated air or process exhaust enters the oxidizer. The gas stream is typically pre-filtered if necessary before entering the combustion chamber.
Combustion Area: Also known as the combustion chamber, this is where the VOCs are oxidized at high temperatures (usually between 1,400°F and 1,800°F). A burner or heating system is used to initiate and maintain the required temperature.
Regenerative Area: This section contains ceramic heat exchange media designed to absorb and store heat from the cleaned gas. The regenerative chambers alternate between heating and cooling cycles to maximize thermal efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
Distribution Area: Valves and dampers direct the flow of exhaust gas through the ceramic media beds. This ensures proper distribution and efficient heat exchange between the incoming contaminated air and the cleaned outgoing air.

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer Working Principle

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers operate on the principle of destroying volatile organic compounds in exhaust gas through high-temperature thermal oxidation, converting them into carbon dioxide and water vapor at temperatures around 800°C. The system employs a single, continuously rotating distribution valve that replaces conventional multiple poppet valves. This innovative valve design horizontally divides a cylindrical heat storage bed into multiple independent sectors.
As the valve rotates slowly, each sector sequentially undergoes different phases of the treatment process: preheating incoming contaminated gas, storing heat from outgoing purified gas, and undergoing purging. This rotational movement creates a smooth, continuous transition between operational phases, eliminating the pressure fluctuations typically associated with traditional switching valves.
Contaminated exhaust gas enters through the rotating valve and passes through hot ceramic sectors where it is preheated before reaching the combustion chamber. Natural gas and combustion air are supplied to maintain the required oxidation temperature. The purified gas then transfers its heat to cooler ceramic sectors as it exits, enabling efficient thermal energy recovery. A small portion of purified gas is used for the purging phase to prevent leakage of untreated exhaust, while special sealing zones maintain gas tightness between different process streams. This continuous rotary configuration enhances operational reliability and thermal efficiency while reducing maintenance requirements compared to conventional systems.
