How does a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer Work?

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers function by eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaust streams through high-temperature oxidation—efficiently breaking them down into carbon dioxide and water vapor at operating temperatures of approximately 800°C. A key feature of this system is its use of a single, continuously rotating distribution valve, which replaces the conventional array of poppet valves. This innovative valve configuration partitions a cylindrical heat storage bed horizontally into several independent sectors, thereby streamlining the gas flow management.

As this valve gradually rotates, each sector cyclically performs distinct functions: preheating the incoming polluted gas, recovering and storing thermal energy from the cleaned effluent, and undergoing a purging process. This smooth, uninterrupted rotation ensures seamless transitions between operational stages, significantly reducing pressure fluctuations commonly encountered in traditional valve-switching systems.

The process begins when contaminated gas enters through the rotary valve and moves through preheated ceramic sectors, raising its temperature before it enters the combustion chamber. Following treatment, the purified gas passes through cooler ceramic zones, transferring heat to the media and enabling highly efficient thermal recovery.
